Orford Castle is a massive 12th century Keep constructed from septaria with Barnack Stone dressings. A comprehensive condition survey and a feasibility study was carried out by OCC to consider options for repair. In order to provide visual evidence of the options, small scale trials were carried out by OCC using a variety of techniques. After consultation with all stakeholders, including English Heritage who are responsible for the property, the conclusion was that the only way to protect the fractured septaria (and thus allow public access) was to render the elevations as per the original finish. This led to larger trials (supervised by OCC) which proved successful so a phased project of re-rendering the Castle is under way.
