Buckingham Palace

The inner quadrangle at Buckingham Palace has had a variety of cleaning programmes with additional complexity provided by the application of copperas to the Bath stone facade. The central section of the south range was selected to carry out cleaning trials, a  condition laid down by Westminster City Council in the Listed Building consent. OCC and Restorative Techniques carried out the trials using a variety of methods including dry brushing, super-heated water cleaning with Thermatech, ammonium carbonate cleaning and Vortech swirl abrasive. The intention was to achieve a light clean whilst retaining the copperas; methods that achieved the most satisfactory results (multiple passes with Thermatech and selective poulticing) were then used by a main contractor to clean the whole area.
