As part of a Lottery funded restoration of this building for community use, one elevation was re-rendered. Defects in the render quickly became apparent and OCC was commissioned to investigate the causes. This involved understanding the materials and methodology used and close examination and testing of the render. Techniques included Drill Resistance measurement to provide information on the depth of carbonation, time-lapse photography to study how the render was affected by direct rainfall, USB microscopy and careful recording. After two years of monitoring, a final report brought the results together and allowed the client to carry out remedial works with confidence that the underlying issues had been addressed.
